Seeking Islamic Knowledge at University

Islamic Medical Association of Nottingha

Shall I start or can it wait?

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

As students most of use feel like our time to seek knowledge will probably come once we’ve graduated or once we have a stable income or just once we pass the next milestone we’re working towards. But what if that time doesn’t come? What if our return to Allah is planned for before then?

The importance of seeking Islamic knowledge cannot be overstated. In first five verses revealed of the Qur’an, the word “اقـــــرأ” (read) is repeated twice, the word "قـــــلــــم" (pen) is mentioned once and the word "عــــلَّـم" (teach) is repeated twice.

In the following verses in Surah Al-‘Alaq. “Read in the name of your Lord Who created. He created man from a clot. Read and your Lord is the Most Honourable. Who taught by the pen. Taught man what he knew not.” (Qur’an 96:1-5)

As students we have compiled a list of resources to support our first step into learning about our religion. If you have personal suggestions to add to this document please get in touch.

Fiqh of Medicine

Al-Balagh Fiqh of Medicine

As a medical professional, you will be faced with many pressing questions that you may or may not have the answer to, Islamically. For example:

Should I proceed with this abortion if it is only for family planning purposes?
Is it sinful at my end to do constructive plastic surgery for my patients?
Can I pull the plug for my patient who has been declared brain dead?
Are there Islamic rulings on these aspects of medicine?

Yes, there are.

With this quick program of 4+ months, you will be equipped with the principles of Islamic Jurisprudence [Usul ul Fiqh] as a basis for the practice of medicine, develop a greater understanding of the Islamic rulings related to the field of Islamic medical ethics, discuss the critical concepts of Islamic theology and doctrinal positions that underpin Islamic moral frameworks and more.
